At Athlete By Choice we are dedicated to bringing you the best in personal training, outdoor sports strength & conditioning, climbing coaching and home workouts designed to be performed with no or minimal equipment in the comfort of your own home or anywhere else you have a little bit of space and a little bit of time. Our workouts are designed to be effective whole body workouts that are ideal for those trying to get or maintain fitness, lose weight, or to compliment training for other sports.

We also provide in person or online sport specific training programs, especially for rock climbing. Our climbing training comes from over a decade of experience in coaching and training for high level climbing performance.

Recently I was approached by my friend Matthias at Zlagboard ( to have a look at their boards and see what I thought. The boards were on their way from Europe to the Australian market (check out to get your hands on them) and there was one with my name on it to check out.

Now, hangboards come in all sorts of shapes and sizes nowadays: big, small, simple, contrived, resin, wood, portable, fixed… the options are endless. There really is something for every purpose.
The Zlagboards are nicely finished wood boards which, we think, is the best option for training boards as it is much friendlier on the skin allowing you to train more without losing all your skin every session.
And while the boards are comfortable and skin friendly with a perfect arrangement of edge sizes, slopers and a good jug, it’s not this that makes it stand out. It is the mechanism that it is mounted on that holds your smart phone running the Zlagboard App that truly makes these boards stand out miles above the rest.
When you hang on the board the mounting moves the angle of your phone and allows it to time your hangs automatically once you have calibrated your phone and board together (a 1 minute process when you set the board up).
Once calibrated you can then choose from a range of individual workouts in the App, or indeed full 12 Week Training Programs, at levels from beginner to pro, and be guided through your sessions by the App which automatically times your exercises, times your rests for you, the lot. Allowing you to see and measure your progress as you work over time on the board.
You can also measure your performance against other athletes all over the world using the competition edge and the App’s built in competition register.

All of the workouts and programs are written by world class climbing coaches – Patxi Usobiaga, and the guys behind Gimme Kraft: Patrick Matros and Dicki Korb. So you can follow perfectly laid out 12 week training programs on the boards, being coached along at each step by some of the best coaches in the world.
And Athlete By Choice is proud to say that our own Duncan Brown will be joining that list and providing workouts and training programs very soon – keep your eyes peeled for that!

Additionally, if you get the Zlagboard Vario you can attach any other hangboard you like to it and using the App you can create workouts for yourself on any type of board you like. Endless versatility! (The Zlagboard App currently has workouts for the Zlagboard Vario using the Zlagboard Slopers, Beastmaker 2000 and Moon Fingerboard with more coming soon).

In short, the Zlagboard App is hands down the biggest step forward in hangboard training technology since hangboards were first introduced. For those climbers serious about their training this is a must have training tool. Seriously. Get one.
